foreigner

i know there are lots and lots of foreigners in helsinki – but sometimes, just sometimes, it feels like i am the only one.

any time i go into the student office in my college and ask for anything – i dont need to show id or tell them who i am – i am automatically known.

last week i went to collect a package from a delivery company. i didnt have to sign for anything – they just handed it over.

One response to “foreigner”

  1. I had the same thing in high school — if not the only person who didn’t go to elementary school in this country, I was certainly the only one out of eastern Europe. It comes in handy, you get random people knowing you, and as long as nobody discriminates, no downsides 🙂

What really came as a shock was moving to university. Throughout four years, I’ve gotten used to being the foreign kid, the one who spoke with an accent — then I got here and half the people have accents stronger than mine. That made for interesting adaptation…
