2006.11.20 00:17 | helsinki, randomnessi know there are lots and lots of foreigners in helsinki – but sometimes, just sometimes, it feels like i am the only one.
any time i go into the student office in my college and ask for anything – i dont need to show id or tell them who i am – i am automatically known.
last week i went to collect a package from a delivery company. i didnt have to sign for anything – they just handed it over.

I had the same thing in high school — if not the only person who didn’t go to elementary school in this country, I was certainly the only one out of eastern Europe. It comes in handy, you get random people knowing you, and as long as nobody discriminates, no downsides
What really came as a shock was moving to university. Throughout four years, I’ve gotten used to being the foreign kid, the one who spoke with an accent — then I got here and half the people have accents stronger than mine. That made for interesting adaptation…
