move went pretty well. so far so good. settling in nicely. loads of space and light.

putting the computer now into the big box.. moving tonight and tomorrow.. back online sometime tomorrow... bye ullanliina, hello pasila
around the time i moved from ireland, a show called sampler was on network 2. anyway they have the 6 episodes on the site in stream realvideo files. episode 4 has an interview with the people behind the slate magazine. hurray.
here is a website with links to loads and loads of links to tv stations all over the world... over 100 countries in there... you will need boadband, realplayer or windows media player and no javascript/popup stopper things going on..
i found a website that has some cool images of nyc. i only looked at a few cos its late and im tired.

a piece in the guardian last week about the legal implications of war in iraq and americas behaviour by george monbiot
i didnt post this the other day when i got it first.. its the cover of the 3inch cd single for untitled 1 (vaka) that sigur rs are bringing out in a month or so..
thats bjrns hand and wall there too.. the packaging looks fantastic.. its also out on dvd and normal cd standard...
yesterday after school we went out to the uiah campus in the arabia area of helsinki. went to take some pictures for hddi and to have a look around for myself.
we saw some of the graphic design department and some of the furniture design area. seemed really nice. the college itself was pretty quiet being a friday evening. we saw the finnish president who was at an art exhibition in the building.
right beside the college is an iittala shop. i looked for and found the cool candle holder i had seen in a brouchure before
unfortunately the real life version was a complete disappointment. i was expecting something small and pretty subtle. but it was about 70cm in height and looked pretty tacky. plus it was in the region of 230 so, all in all a dissapointment. here is a pic we took yesterday.. hard to get a scale from it.
anyway thats it.. packing and things at the moment.. we move tomorrow night and monday
outside my classroom where i am learning finnish there is an derelict building. ive been wanting to take a picture of it for ages and today i finally did!..

when everyone visited here for new years, one of the nights we ended up in the (now closed) bar "soda"... on the tv was playing a movie that for some strange reason completely hypnotised me.. we found out from the d.j. that it was a film called koyaanisqatsi from 1983... anyway pivi found the soundtrack in the library and im listening to it now.. incredibly cheesy and really 1980's sounding but incredibly atmospheric.

two more pics of today. snow and ice melting and summer coming...

just got the digicam for a few days.. here is my local church... johanneksenkirkko

im getting a lend of a digicam tomorrow for a few days. im going to take loads of pictures of the area im currently living in (ullanlinna) before we move to just north of the city centre (pasila).
in the mean time, hrur sent me a link with some photos taken by a photographers (mainly ilkka uimonen) in iraq. its on the magnum website. click on the image for the page with more photos.

blue skies here this morning. i took this image on my incredibly bad digicam for my palm visor. spring is here. this is the view out of our kitchen window. last weekend here. moving next weekend.
no real point to me posting these pics.
in college for some reason we have a book called "283 useless ides from japan" most of them are pretty useless, but ingenious... one of them was differntly shaped buildings.. including the "spiral building"... i havent been able to find any images of the actual building.. but click on the image for a link to the buildings website.

sebastio salgado is doing an exhibition at the barbican centre in london... its on till june.. hopefully it will make its way to this part of the world after.
this is taken from a book called migrations, which i bought about 2 years ago. its taken me this long to get half way through it. its nothing something i can get through easily. its pretty intense.
as far as i can tell this is his (semi) official site, loads and loads of images from his books.
i was reading about a german photographer called candida hfer, who is amongst some other german photographers who take pictures of places, usually large rooms (mostly empty of people) and highlights the (perhaps the wrong word) emptiness of it. possibly a slight sense of isolation and sterility. anyway i found some pictures at a galleries website, you can see the pictures here ( a bio on the artist is here )

found out about a supposedly cool magazine. first two issues are sold out so it might be hard to find... its called next level and is mainly about modern photography and architecture.

looks like war will begin in a few days.. ive been reading some websites about the coverage of the run up to the war. this one shows a difference between bush and blair. bush controls the media, almost mocking journalists and demeening them:
"his aides let it be known that mr. bush sneers at the way reporters sculpt their hair and apply makeup for their prime-time appearances, a disdain that shows. "hell laugh at your questions," said a white house newspaper correspondent who has suffered that fate"
whereas blair (for all the accusations of being a "lackey" of america) stands up for what he believes and doesnt mind tough questions:
mr. blair took one blunt question after another, including this killer: what he would say to a mother who has just waved her young son goodbye, knowing he may never return from iraq? yet rather than retreat into dogma, the prime minister spoke like a realyet intelligentperson. "i understand, of course, my people think its a very remote threat, and its far away, and why does it bother us. now i simply say to you, it is a matter of time, unless we act and take a stand, before terrorism and weapons of mass destruction come together. and i regard them as two sides of the same coin." mr. blair was so intellectually honest that he even raised the complicating question of north korea unprompted. mr. bush probably would have insulted the reporter.
anyway, whatever happens the world is a poorer place.
my first st. patricks day away from ireland. it was spent learning some finnish and going for a really really nice sauna.
high five! (samurai jack ep18)
almost two years after i first heard it, i finally got the words to the rimur tour ep that sigur rs and steindr anderson did. its amazing to be able to make some sense of the words.. (some sense = see the spelling) i still have no idea of the meaning of course, but that hasnt stopped me all that much with sigur rs. in the discography page there is passage:
rmur were regarded as a performance art; a good rmur chanter would engage his listeners with his clever rhyming schemes and catchy melodies. rmur were performed on winter nights when inhabitants sat occupied by their work (making clothing from wool, wreathing horsehairs into ropes, cutting tools from wood, etc.) for seven centuries, this was icelanders' only branch of entertainment and it's only recently that this tradition has dissolved.
the (icelandic) text for the tour ep is here.
saint patricks weekend celebrations in dublin last night.

the irish reporter fergal keane is the bbc's correspondent in amman, jordan. here he gives some impressions of waiting for war. (a version for the independent newspaper is here)
i just joined corbis, looking for many royalty free images... found some of helsinki.. during the summer! this one is of finlandiatalo on töölölahti just beside the city centre here in helsinki. in the background is the parliment house.

this finnish brand produces many home cutlery and glasses and things along those lines. they have some amazing stuff. pretty expensive, but worth it if you want to fill the emptiness.
harri koskinen is one of their designers. he did an amazing (work with me here) candle holder. pretty hard to make out from that picture, plus the brocuhure on the website doesnt give any better ones...
webcam time! the image below is from today. click on this link for a live one!
as you can see its going from "almost spring" with melting snow and blue skies to winter time again!. snow! grey white wonderful snow.
the camera is pointing at kauppatori at the bottom of esplanadi (about 7min walk from my place)
the whitney museum of american art is having an exhibition by an artist called david crawford. he did a pretty cool thing with stopmotion in london/paris/nyc + boston. you can view it here

the site that the pervious post is on is occupying me now for a while. an amazing site with loads of amazing and simple flash/shockwave files.
surface.yugop.com
(nb: you need a fast connection to enjoy this site)
you can see the flash animation at this site. its a flash file based on a simple idea, done very very well.
a fantastic article by united press international on a possible reasoning behind north korea's strategy
