wandering around town yesterday, one of the first proper days of summer, i got the latest wired magazine. guest editor this month was architect rem koolhaas. a lot of little articles in there towards the end of the issue.

now on a different subject. the picture is of the huge new developement here in the city centre in helsinki. still at early construction stages.

i have some friends visiting from new york and they robbed a wallpaper* magazine from the airplane. there is some really cool articles in it, one is a photo essay by the fashion designer and photographer helmut newton. the essay consists of photos from nyc, vienna, moscow, las vegas, prague, miami and so on. some pretty cool pictures and little bits of texts about his impressions of the cities.
vienna is a fascinating city, and one i often visit. indeed, i'm planning another trip there soon. while i love the city, i find the inhabitants strange - even the young people are old.
the magazine was on a plane, an sas airplane. and it flew over the atlantic several times. back and forth.. its probably done about 30000kilometers!. madness. anyway, im slightly drunk and its 0200. bed.

[+] the helmut newton article is in the june 2003 edition, page 140 until 160

getting packages in the post really is the best thing ever. boxes from home, from far off places full with this and that. i am pretty lucky to have a few people who are masters of the package sending art thingy. one more arrived today from hörður full of amazing photos and magazines. the outside was plastered with 26 stamps!.

anyway. two weeks ago some irish friends visited. tomorrow some nyc friends visit. in a 5 weeks some icelandic friends visit, in 2 months some irish ones visit. nicely spaced out so as to help me from collapsing due to my helsinki tour responsibilities.
"on your left is a cool building, on your right is a cool building, nope.. i cant remember who designed that one either.. but its cool though".
ah. the joys of having a crap memory.

summer time has arrived. and with the arrival of each new season comes the new h + m billboards. last autumns involved almost every single bilboard and tram stop being taken over with ads of lovely lovely ladies modeling some clothes or jackets.

for some reason there was no winter ads (here in helsinki at least). but they did come storming back with a spring campaign that (i think) was focused around supermodel iman. well, theyve done it again with the summer series. so much so that hundreds have been robebd (by teenage boys) and defaced (by feminists) in germany (now they are giving out them for free to stop the vandalism). this series is based around heidi klum.

in school the last two days we've gone to two libraries. on wednesday we went to kallion kirjasto and earlier today (thursday) we went to pasilankirjasto. anyway due to the nature of my finnish language course i am with a lot of people from all over the world. so ive become mildly fascinated with the differences in language and patterns of speach and things like that. seeing tamil and chinese and pakistani and other forms of writing amuses me no end. today in the library i got two books. one was "languages of the world" and the other being "langugage, its sturcture and use". im not overly technically interested in the subject, just like reading through them seeing things i didnt know before about links between different languages. (interesting fact: the word "slogan" came from irish! madness!) apart from those heavy books and another one on city planning.. i have a feeling i'll finish the dilbert book, which i also got, first.

i forgot the video. i only remembered that i should have dropped it into the r-kioski beside the tram stop 10minutes after i had got on the tram. so i had to get off the 7b, get on the 7a.. go home, get the video, go to r-kioski, drop it off, then get the 7b back then to city centre then walked around the magazine part of stockmann. all the good magazines in either finnish or swedish (they did have english ads in them though). anyway, left there and walked to saunabar in the rain. thought about this bloggy thingy. love it to bits but i dont have enough to post. but who cares about quantity. i remembered then an article from wired a few years back. it was all about how the currency of the new economy will not be money, but it will be attention. look at me, listen to me, give me your attention kinda thing. blogs are like that. normal people, blogging, posting whats going on to the outside world or friends or random passers by. blogger.com has a "ten most recent posts" on their main page. i look at them randomly every now and then when im checking out the lastest blogger news. i open them, look then move on.

anyway, i remember reading this article when it was in the print issue (back in december 1997)and i remember intensily reading the article. these days when im online or when i read i skip through everything glancing at the first paragraph or two and then usually the last (thats where the good juicy things are) and same with many other things online.
in cyberspace, there is nothing natural about large-scale divisions like cities, nations, bureaucracies, and corporations. the only divisions, and rough ones at that, are among audiences, entourages, and what could be called attention communities. each community is centered on some topic and usually includes a number of stars, along with their fans. attention flows from community to community. below this primary exchange will flow the less important exchange of goods and materials.

anyway, how they all fit together is something that i dont know yet. that wired article can be found here.

been a few days. this is a pointless post. french curtains in a french mini-apartment.

only in ireland!
...the opposition also questioned why, in an effort to save €13 in subsistence payments, members of the dublin garda motorcycle unit, who deal with the city traffic, go for their tea at rush-hour and return when it is over.

fantastic, gave me a good laugh this morning. ah ireland. how i love thee so. there is three ways of doing things in ireland. the right way (done very very rarely), the wrong way (surprisingly pretty rare too) and then "the irish way" which is the wrong way done really really slowly and a hell of a lot more expensively and with some tribunals in there too. also helps if the end result is pretty crap too.
labour's finance spokeswoman, ms joan burton said that the minister of state for justice had promised a "garda bicycle" for blanchardstown, when she asked how many bikes would the dublin west town get and when, mr naughten quipped: "does a garda come with them?" the minister's response was: "you can cycle away on that one."

"you can cycle away on that one." ah, a try at a witty statement there. sometimes it feels like the irish times is getting pretty close to the slate in the funny lines hidden in it.

taken shortly ago here in our suburb. its a pretty ugly area in helsinki, full of office blocks and apartment blocks in between them. some really cool things to photograph them. shame then that i dont have a camera much and when i do i take pics at night when the camera is at its weakest.

yesterday was spent walking around helsinki. some friends were over from ireland, so we did a monster 8hour tour of the city, ending up in suomenlinna in helsinki harbour last night. sun was setting when we were there. seeing the battlements from the 18th century.

ah. todays irish times has a great article about getting your communion. every kid gets it in ireland when they are 7 or 8. they get loads of money. hurray. anyway, here are some impressions of this years batch of communionites.

"what am i looking forward to? you won't have to go to any more trouble buying stuff until your confirmation. after my communion, i'll be finished something special. it's special because you won't be doing it again for the first time. i'm going to be able to eat the bread. the bread is the body and blood of jesus."
claire redington (8)

"you normally get money. a lot of my cousins got millions and millions. i think i'll get some. all my cousins and aunties are coming. the body of jesus is the bread. what does it mean? i'm not sure, really."
patrick mcdermott (8)

"i'll be receiving jesus into me and all that. the bread of life. i don't think i'll feel any different afterwards. children get presents on their communion because it's a big day for them, like their birthday."
jack dunne (8)

"i'm looking forward to it because you get to put on a communion dress. my dress is white with lots of pearls and a bow. i don't know why the dresses are white. eating the bread of life means you're going to take jesus with you wherever you go. you get presents from people because they love you and they're after seeing what you've done and they're very very happy for you."
ciara bowens (8)

"after my communion i'm going to be a part of jesus' family. it's going to be a very special day. i'll feel different afterwards because i know jesus loves me."
james prendergast (8)

my communion was spent in a restraunt a few miles from my home. i dont remember anything about it. just got loads of money which i think i was made save. otherwise id spend it on rubbish like plastic airplanes (that phase started soon after)

taken last night at our local train station here in pasila. just one stop north of helsinki. in the distance you can see the hartwall arena where the ice hockey world championships are on at the moment.

i have some mates here from ireland for a few days, so last night we went for a walk around the city. i took some pictures but it was too dark so none of them came out too well. doh. i have the camera until next wednesday. hopefully the sigur rós stencil set gets to me in the post before then so i can take new pictures of the results.

crikey. well. i want it. gotta get me a job.

japan's expertise in technology, design and engineering is responsible for some of the most advanced and desirable consumer products in the world. names such as sony, sharp, honda, yamaha and canon have acquired legendary status in contemporary culture. detail examines and celebrates the manufactured precision and technical virtuosity of mass-produced japanese products - products we use or see everyday, but whose complexity of invention we only partly understand and appreciate.
the book explores key themes such as artificial intelligence and robotics, showing the latest products - from honda's asimo humanoid robot and sony's aibo dog to epson's micro-robots. miniaturization is another important strand of japanese product design: as cameras, watches and communications devices are becoming ever smaller, their technological functions are increasing to a level unimaginable ten, or even five, years ago. detail shows how japanese manufacturers constantly strive to invent new forms and to perfect existing technologies.
also revealed in this book are the qualities found in traditional japanese aesthetics - minimalism, elegance, simplicity, symmetry, workmanship and clearly-expressed function - and their evolution into modern, highly technical, mass-produced products. in addition, a brief cultural and historical background of how japan came to dominate the development of high-quality mass-manufacturing is offered.

if only they could do something about the economy there. you can buy it here

these are taken from the intro to the original version of the "svefn g englar" video by sigur rs. they are releasing a single from their current album next week and they are putting their three videos onto a dvd. the version on the dvd wont have these quotes in it and is re-edited to the version that first came out.

i first saw this video one late wednesday night on "4music" on channel 4. i think i watched it a thousand times. brilliant. their second video, for "virar vel til loftrsa" was even better. the latest video for track one on the "( )" album isnt as good. anyway. buy the dvd when it comes out on may 12th.

at this stage of my life i should be trilingual (and on my way to becoming berlingual). a life time of speaking english, thirteen years spent studying irish, 6 spent studying french. right now im studying finnish. so that should make it four. but..... my irish is non existant. my french is incredibly bad. my finnish is improving (currently at a 2yr old finnish kid level) and to make it all worse my english is getting worse. not being around fluent speakers means that i am forgetting words and phrases and getting bits messed up. erm. move along

i presume everyone else in the known galaxy has seen this ad on television. bjrn sent me the link a week or two ago. i found this daily telegraph article linked to on a plastic.com piece.
"it was like watching a brilliant footballer weaving his way the whole way through a defending team's players, and then shooting wide right at the end," says tony davidson. the crew resorted to placing bets on which part of the sequence would go wrong. invariably it was the windscreen wipers. when the final, 606th take eventually succeeded, there was a stunned silence around the paris studio. then, like shipwrecked mariners finally realising that their ordeal was at an end, the team broke into a careworn chorus of increasingly defiant cheers and hurrahs. champagne bottles popped. the cylinder liner had brushed its nose affectionately against the rocker shaft and the gear wheel cog for the last time. the interior grab handles and the suspension spring coils had done their bit. a classic was complete. cog was in the can.

good work all round.

helsingin sanomat (who also supplied the pic in the last post) here explain the meaning of "vappu"

 Friday, May 02, 2003 | link |
vappu day was today. yesterday. gone midnight. thousands of drunken finns. everywhere. shame the rain came. kids with families walking around and heading too and from the park. high school students celebrating by getting drunk. university students getting drunk while wearing truely bizarre overalls (some of which can be seen in the pic..)

everyone who has graduated highschool was wearing the white hat, including some statues. a really cool sight, espically for me as an irish person. when ever there is (in ireland) exam results or graduations they usually involve a small proportion of the population. here everyone one seems to relish celebration of their eduction (and an excuse for a day off and some alcahol)
