after this post last week, i saw that the dvd set was on sale in some shops here in helsinki. but it was priced at about 27€ each, way over my budget for some self indulgance. yesterday saw the arrival of some packages from home, inside was some cards from relations with some money. so off i went to get one of the three dvds. when the series first came out i was only interested in the chris cunningham one, but the gondry one seemed better value for money. so i got that. its one of the best things ive bought in ages. the videos are top class (and im only half way through so far), the making of../background documentary is just fantastic, funny and intersting. there was one video on it that i remembered from years ago. the "sugar water" video by a japanese band cibo matto was on an irish music show about 8ish years ago and all i remembered was the concept:| essentially "sugar water" is a one-take video, told on two sides of the screen. seems easy: everyone witnessed chris applebaum's video for "closing time" by semisonic. but what that later video lacked was a clear and concise link between the song, its lyrics, and the characters between each side of the screen. no offense to applebaum: the video is clearly a great achievement, and was worth every penny spent on it |
so it was a complete surprise to find that gondry had directed it (more info here). anyway, get the dvd in your local record/video/online store.. two thumbs up! (amazon.com / amazon.co.uk)

next christmas i will buy myself this:
december 21st really is a little too late to be sending christmas cards, but thats exactley what i did. plus they wont be collected from the local post box until tomorrow evening, so it will be min january before delivery is made. plus i still have a few packages/cards to put together. all this shows that i have no christmas spirit. its on its way though, snowed here all last night and still is now.
without much christmas spirit, it was hard to do a christmas email image for my friends. last years (on the left) was a triumph, this years was a labour intensive exercise, hours in front of old pictures i took, adding this and that in photoshop. in the end i gave up and used an image from early october.
 
anyway, click on either of the images for higher res versions, but the links might break in a few weeks when i take the hi-res ones down. whatever!
an early christmas present, a dvd player with a mind of its own. last night, it decided to just switch itself on and even though the television was switched off, we could still hear it though the dvds speakers. it was a man talking. we found out then that it was a show on sub tv, so then a few minutes in to it there was an ad break, so i looked what else was on. i stumbled onto a documentary movie on yle2. it was a documentary about a few people in new york who live their lives around movies. going to see a few every single day. it was called "cinemania", if you have a chance to see it, do.
its cold outside, snow falling and melting and then making my shoes all wet. but reading this makes me smile
i had a camera for a week. i was a little bit busy, but still, dozens of boring dark out of focus pictures.

the directors label has just released on dvd the collections of three fantsastic directors, chris cunningham (aphex twin, squarepusher etc.), spike jonze (fatboy slim, beck, etc.) and michael gondry (daft punk, the white stripes, etc.). go to this page on the bbc website for more info.
there is a list in my diary of all the people i should send cards/packages to. my mission this weekend is to complete as many of them as possible, but its independence day (itsenäisyyspäivä) here tomorrow, so i wont be able to get all the cards! (all the shops will be closed). so sunday it is! but ive to learn the basics of archicad over the next 8 days. i need some time management techniques.
