my first few months in college in dublin were spent sharing a room in a family house in whitehall in dublin. it didnt last long. then i moved into a apartment above the best sandwich shop near my college. it didnt last long either. then i moved into 78 stewart hall with some friends (this was may 1996) and over the next few years somewhere in the region of about a dozen people lived in that apartment. i slept on the couch for months. we played cards and were woken up at 8am by josh wink songs at really high volume. we laughed for ages at one flat mate who kept his socks on the window cill everynight to get rid of the smell. then it came time to move, so after a while of running around town looking at flats we eventually settled on an apartment on the same floor, it made moving everything so much easier. so we moved in there (no 81). i cant remember when it happened though. sometime around 98 or 99 i think. over the next few years a few of us lived in there, sleeping arrangements changing every few months. i laughed constantly at the purple carpet in the bathroom, sitting room and bedrooms. the horrible sofa and the dreadful curtains. the horrible layout where we got almost no direct sunlight. but it was home, so we all loved it. i left the apartment in august 2002 to move to here and friends of mine continued to live there until today. paul sent me the picture below just now as he left for the last time. bye bye 81!

super furry animals play in dublin a few hours after i leave on march 28th. doh.
a silver mount zion play st. petersburg a few hours after i arrive back into helsinki on march 28th (there is no way i could get to st. petersburg from here for the gig). so i emailed the record label and asked them to see if they could get a gig here. tiny infinitesimally small chance.
there is a sign across the road from our apartment, just the other side of the tram stop, its a green sign for a finnish company, etera. the green sign is catching the fog we have at the moment, so the air is green. its such a beautiful sight. no camera though. hence this message.
i've spent the last few nights reading 'delirious new york' by the dutch architect rem koolhaas. most of it goes silently over my head.
goddam poles. such super cool photo websites.

taken a few weeks ago. a few hours later the fresh snow was all ruined by the rampaging päiväkoti (kindergarden/preschool) kids.
hurray. according to jose-gonzalez.com, josé will be playing two gigs in finland, the first in jakobstad (pietarsaari) on april 16th and the second in jyväskylä in central finland on april 17th at the curiousily titled "y rock". hmm, i think i remember seeing this festival on a tv show last year, it had some signs at it saying "y not?" or something. anyway, i actually have a concert here in finland to look forward to.
edit: the train to jyv?skyl? is almost 40? each way. so its 80? before any other expensese. (therefore ruling the two gigs out for me). i emailed jos?'s manager about a helsinki gig, and he said that they were on the look out for one. so fingers crossed.

thank you.
there is a college course that im (very) interested in. it starts next september, but i have to do some drawings as part of the application process.
ennakkotehtävä 2 : no sehän sopii kuin …
(thankfully päivi translated it all)
ennakkotehtävä 1 : impossible furniture
when drawing or paintin 3d pieces, it is possible to cheat the viewers using a bluff. you can make picutres of pieces that dont really exist. create your own piece and use it for a 3d furniture (which cant exist). finnis it by doing a picture where this furnuitre is placed into a suitably realistic environment. coloured picture done by hand or by digital means on a4 paper.
ennakkotehtävä 2 ”well that matches like….”
draw a 6-12 squared cartoon or storyboard from the following story, where you can make up your own happy or unhappy ending.
”saila has bought a big jugend style drawer/bookshelf which is in a bad condition from the fleamarket. she has sucessfully charmed the antique seller into binring it by car to her homedoor. now she only has to get teemu to help her to carry it up to the young couples one-bedroom apartment. the apartment is on the 4th floor and the spiral staircase (kierreporras) is very cramped (ahdas).the shelf is all wooden and its hard to find a good way to carry it up. when finally, after a huge hassle, they get it carried up. the realise that the whole hall fills up (the kaapi is so big, the hall so small) that you cant really get by it, and the doors are to the other rooms are so small that you cant take it any further. valuable antique discovery doesnt seem to fit anywhere."
by hand drawing; black and white or coloured presentation on one or two a4 sized paper. use as little text as possible |
part one shouldnt be too much of a problem. part two is a little bit more. i have begun to lay out the story so far, but every time i take up a pencil and start to draw something, it ends up looking like something a 2year old would draw. anyway, i have to submit it during the first week of april, meaning i have only a few short weeks to discover some artistic talent. uhoh. i'll put what ive done on here in may sometime, when i've found out if i have been accepted or not.

music to listen to as green field go by. not sure what it is yet. i'd better find out.
if the banner on this website is annoying you (it annoys me but will cost me 65euros a year to remove it), then maybe give mozilla or firefox a chance. i havent seen the banner in months!. the banner thing doesnt apply thankfully to the livejournal feed or the xml atom feed.
ive put thumbnail index pages to the the few albums i have on my photo page. it now makes it slightly easier to view the images. anyway, i'm not happy with it, so its just a temporary thing until i find some nice photo indexing thing (well, i havent looked yet, so id better)
i got to see some really cool photos of the snow show that is going on in rovaniemi in northern finland. there is another show (wild snow) on in a town called kemi aswell (but its not meant to be as good).
at the show in rovaniemi there is some pretty famous architects taking part, like tado ando and zaha hadid, aswell as other people like yoko ono.
here is tado andos design:

edit: the bbc world programme 'fasttrack' have a show from there aswell. read here
just spent some time looking at the website of a danish architectural office: plot. some fantastic projects. check it out. (this image is taken from the "mar" project in the "public space" section. its of a marina in copenhagen.

on this page you can download and listen to any of the radio helsinki jingles that are at the end of songs or before ad breaks. fantastic stuff! (really!)
i was writing an email earlier on about a college course im interested in. here is part of it:
| currently i am in "työharjoittelu" in an architects office here in helsinki, and for the last year or so i have been studying finnish daily. |
i've been studying finnish a year and yet im still writing letters/emails to finnish people in english. shame on me. now i have to go spend an hour writing it in finnish. doh :)
huge european tour from mm. www.noisedfisk.com/mumweb/. not finland though.
ive added a proper index file to my sigur rs directory. www.drrnwbb.com/sigur-ros/. there are sigur rs files that im hosting for sigur-ros.co.uk plus also some lists of all the live concert files im sharing on our dc++ hub.
short list of my shared sigur rós live files html 40kb
full list of my shared sigur rós files: html 236kb |
sorry for the pretty random posts today, i got choclate in the post today from a friend back in ireland. its the first time ive eaten choclate in two weeks so im a little hyper.
| how to watch a video in a few (not so easy) steps
|
|
i wanted to watch a bit of the george bush interview from yesterday. windows media player would be an obvious place to go look for one (the interview was on nbc, so with the msnbc connection, it led me to trying media guide in the ms media player). anyway after a few clicks here and there i found a nice link to it.
what i expected to happen:
- i click on the link and the clip plays.
what did happen:
- i click on "intelligence probe"
- and my browser opens up. "hmm" i thought.
- i'm not using internet explorer 6 as my default browser, so i have to exit firefox and open internet explorer with the same url. it checks to make sure i have flash installed. then i follow the "launch msn video" button
- so here i am, ten minutes later. still "preparing media" and no sign of it playing the clip i wanted. oh microsoft, why do you make things so difficult for yourself and for me?.
thank you for your time

here is the cover of the split sides ep on sale at the moment on itunes and soonish in physical form in the real world.
merce.sigur-ros.com: see more stuff there
i have been mostly eating digestive biscuits and mostly listening to "walk real slow" from the lady and bird album. nice.
over the last ten days i recieved a total of 1371 spam/virus emails. out of that total, my [old] eircom.net account recieved 1047 spam emails. and my sigur-ros.co.uk accounts got about 250ish mydoom/novarg virus emails.
in addition to those 1371 spam emails, i recieved about 70 proper emails. so about 4,9% of my total emails were non spam. crazy.
i love trams so much. helsinki's trams are incredibly punctual, very well laid out, by and large pretty clean and good value monthly travel (aswell as a century of history). well, i'm really looking forward to seeing the new tram system that is being built in dublin at the moment. i'll get a chance to see it when im home in six weeks.
trams are one of those things that will take years and years to get ingrained into the city properly (dublin had trams before but got rid of them in the 50's i think). one of the dublins lines is mostly finished i think, and is running an almost full service on a portion of the line without any passengers in order to collect safety certificates and to get the car drivers used to trams. anyway, i read this quote on a message board earlier today:
news reports yesterday stated vandals have already struck a luas carriage before it enters service, apparantly some carriages were doing test runs in tallaght when they were attatcked by youths throwing bricks - smashing windows and denting panels.
i now hear that there are plans to visit schools in the area to highlight how important the luas service is to the community.
really, it says a lot when the luas is attatcked before it even carries its first passenger - lets hope this is not a sign of things to come...
|
and then this as a reply:
presently there is much scope for hit`n run attacks from either side of the tracks.
dont be too surprised if items are dragged across the tracks at the m50 bend to slow or stop the tram and allow a full attack from both sides. |
going from past experience where some dublin bus drivers refuse to go into some estates after 6 or 7pm because of safety concerns, the whole thing isnt surprising at all.
the new single/ep thingy went on sale earlier on itunes, i can look but not (digitally) touch. 3 dollars aswell. hope apple get the european record labels on side soon so i can get it.
edit: it will be released on cd/vinyl sometime this sping aswell. forgot to mention that.
