anna jóna and hörður are currently in the hospital in reykjavík. baby should arrive sometime tonight. fingers crossed all goes well. hurray!
update: baby has arrived.
update: 51cm, 3,215kg, not sure of the eyecolour, hair colour similar to that of anna jóna.
everyone knows johnny depp is super cool. but my estimation of him went up another notch this evening when i read the following in the lastest issue of "the face". (its taken from an interview with actress sophia myles)
q: does johnny have any strange (acting) preparation techniques? a: ... johnny has his own personal dj who beams him music from the side of the set. he has a tiny earpiece in one ear and an aerial that he wears around his neck like a lucky charm. all those scenes you saw him play in pirates in the caribbean he probably had some kind of sea shanty sing-along blasting in his ears the whole time for inspiration. |

haha, josé gonzález is coming back!

i saw this on the guardian website:
the quality of the display will come as quite a shock to any seasoned user of mobile devices; it looks more like paper than the computer screen it is. the closest comparison is to think of old-fashioned ink on pulp you're likely holding now, unless you're reading this online, in which case the librie looks far better.

i read a lot of articles online, but with my attention span i only read maybe half of the article. i did have a (to me) genius idea of printing out these articles on a5 paper and making myself little books every week or so to read on the tram or during a break or on the balcony or in the park (summer is coming and im getting ready). my idea was laughed at by some people, but i'll have a go of it sooner or later. anyway, back to the topic at hand, this japanese product looks fantastic and is meant to be very userfriendly. my a5 booklet will do fine in the time being.
yesterday, i read on some website or other than if i logged into blogger.com there would be an invite for active users to sign up for a google gmail account (google owns blogger). so i got one. ive been looking forward to it for a few weeks, having 1gb of email storage space plus good search facilities (the ad hullabaluuu is a bit of a non story though for me). anyway, i logged in and looked around, sent a few test emails, after which i logged out and wondered what the hell am i gonna do with another email account.
if you are in and around helsinki city centre anytime before next monday, have a look out for 16 or so brightly coloured flags hanging in places where normally bank flags or insurance company flags fly from. nene from anteeksi has put these flags up around the city as part of her college thesis. so today at 1730 we all met up outside the svenska teatteri (swedish theatre) and she took us on the guided tour of the flags. she spoke half english half finnish through a loudspeaker to everyone as she described the flags. was a great tour, i'll try to get some photos of it. anyway, it fnnished up on erottajankatu where the "anteeksi" flag was hanging (coincidentally beside the irish flag - it was outside the irish embassy). then we went up for a party with good music and free drinks and stuff.
she put together one of the best invitations ive seen in a while. it might be hard to make out in the pic below:

this pic was taken at her practice back in january (i mentioned it here). another picture was taken for the finnish magazine pàp (its near the end of this months issue (no.10), and that was cut out to make the card above. really cool idea.
ive spent the last few days back in m41lh2 working on some images for a proposal for a proposal of a proposal in helsinki city centre. the 3d model is coming along nicely.
i think im going to be getting my very own digital camera in a few weeks. hurray!. this bit of good news picked me right up today after spending this morning studying the spoken variations of the finnish language and a plethora of finnish idioms.

just got back from the gig, a fantastic gig. it lasted about 50minutes, and the last four songs were covers. one was "born in the usa" by springsteen, but gonzález removed the chorus so it was (still fantastic) but very very eerie. i recorded two of the songs (crossed and heartbeats) on the digicam and they came out pretty okay.
he is doing an interview tomorrow (monday) on radio helsinki at 1700 finnish time, and hopefully there will be some of the songs performed live at tonights gig on the show.
thats it. oh, more photos here [2004.04.18 jose]
almost everytime i go off on a big walk around helsinki city i find a really nice street and i think to myself "id love to live here". well, yesterday on schedule i found another one. välskärinkatu.

thank god for reittiopas
josé gonzález : heartbeats

its the first day of the year where we can sit out in the balcony and not have to wear many layers. hurray. its about +19c out there. lovely stuff.
a few years ago, i went through a phase of going to many 21st birthday parties (they are really popular in ireland). now, it seems that im beginning to enter the "mortgage, babies and weddings" phase.
one baby born, another on the way. many apartments/houses bought (some on the way aswell) and im pencilled in for one wedding in madrid sometime next year and another one in guatemala in febuary!.
i, on the other hand, am currently going through a speedy gonzalez cartoon phase.
ive finally gotten around to doing my report of going home (in finnish). its not been spell checked or had the grammer dusted down. so expect many mistakes.

could this be the subtlest april fools day joke?

when i was back in ireland a few weeks back i spent a night visiting my dad, and i met up with my younger sister and brother when i was there. it was the first time id seen them all since i moved to finland, 18 months or so. two of the coolest kids ive ever met. casey who is 7,5 is so comfortable around horses and now has her own pony (whom she is caring for in the pic on the right). carl is a typical four year old, running all over the place, cycling around the house for no real reason for ages and digging up sand. im pretty sure when i was four i did the same thing, digging sand and then putting it into a bucket of water. why?, no idea. but it was great fun.

im currently in my saarinen family architecture phase. im lucky i dont have money, because if i did i would have bought a few books today. expect more ramblings from me on this subject over the next while.

edit: check out this gallery of twa terminal pictures... lightningfield.com : twa. i was in this terminal in 1999, i took one dreadful photo outside. i'll never forgive myself for not taking a picture walking down the tunnel to the plane. such a fantastic building.
about two years ago (when i was working in dublin) i was designing a house for a husband and wife, and i went to meet the wife to talk over some ideas. she was a believer in the art of feng shui. 'fine' i thought, she had some good ideas about the layout of the house. she spent some time talking about the orientation and flow of the building, its proximity to water and river. things started to get a little strange when she got up and started clapping into various parts of the room in order to show me that the energy in the room was all wrong. luckily i was in shock, so i didnt laugh out loud. but i wanted to. naturally an experience like this would put anyone off feng shui for a while, but now im beginning to warm to it again. "whats the point of all this?" you may ask, no point. i like stories.
i spent some time this morning in the 'suomen rakennustaiteen museo' (finnish architectural museum) where they had some exhibitions on. the main one was about finnish architectural graphics over the last 150 years or so.
architectural graphics
masterly old drawings as well as today's three-dimensional computer graphics and animations show how illusions of built structures were created before and are created now. the exhibition focuses on artistic impression at the same time as it offers a cross section of the development of finnish architecture graphics during two centuries.
|
some of the hand drawings on show were amazing: the proposed designs by oiva kallio for helsinki done in the 1920s were terrific, some 1934 competition entries by yrjö lindegren and toivo juntti were so minimalist and well designed. also there was some amazingly details drawings of churches and government buildings.
this exhibition also gave space to more modern architectural graphic techniques. they had two huge projection screens and one large television showing 3d rendered movies and images done over the last ten years or so by various finnish (mostly helsinki based) offices. some were very impressive, but due to the size of the projections most tended to have a very pixelated look to them. very enjoyable none the less. one of my favourites there was by erkki rousku for pekka salminen architects.
you can see more images on the projects page aswell as on this page
also there was a series of movies from the new kamppi centre that is being built in helsinkis city centre. some of them can be seen at the bottom of this page. from this series, it was interesting to see the developement in what some grapics have become. gone are the images for image sake, the kamppi renderings had the camera walking around computer generated bookshops and pharmacies. now i have got to go write what i thought about it in finnish!.
deportees told to surrender irish passports of children
parents of irish-born children, who are facing deportation, are being told to surrender their children's irish passports before being removed from the state. in one such case, a south african woman living in cork since 2002 was served on march 28th with notice to present herself to gardaí (the irish police force) in dublin on april 13th. the letter, which has been seen by the irish times, states: "i also require you to surrender your child's irish passport." it goes on: "if you fail to comply with any provision of the deportation order or with any requirement in this notice, an immigration officer or a member of the garda sfochana (sic) may arrest and detain you without warrant."

refugee council criticises garda letters to immigrants
the irish refugee council has criticised the gardaí for sending letters to the non-national parents of irish-born children ordering them to surrender their children's passports. peter o'mahony, the council's chief executive, said the gardaí had claimed the phrase 'surrender the passport' was unintended and the letters should have read 'present the passport'. however, mr o'mahony said this attempt to play down the matter did not tally with the next paragraph in the letters, which threatened the arrest and detention of anyone who failed to comply with the order. "it's a fairly dramatic and disturbing new development," he said.

there is a saying in ireland "cead mile fáilte" (a hundred thousand welcomes), it seems to be being tested sorely these days.
there is a referendum being held on this subject in ireland on june 11th. its to decide whether a child born in the country automatically gets citizenship, regardless of the origin on his/hers parents. i was listening to a radio show last night when i heard a minister in the government comment that the words "rampant abuse of the system" (by foreigners wanting to stay in the country) were not inflamintory or scaremongering (the words were said by our taoiseach (prime minister) last week some time). shocking stuff. one of the main reasons the referendum got the wind behind its sails in government circles was an apparent request/appeal/query by the heads of dublins largest maternity hospitals into the fact that 60% or so of the births registered in them were due to non nationals. the government went public with this and tried to use it to justify the referendum that was needed to solve this "crisis". except there isnt much of a crisis. the heads of the hospitals deny making any requests or being worried about the trends (which are now apparently on the downward direction). so we have a referendum for no real reason, it will be something that will only make everything 'black and white' when its a million shades of grey. (not having direct access to irish news probably made my little reconstruction there a little unfair to some parties).
irish history for the last two centuries has involved a large percentage of our population getting out of the country and trying to start a new life somewhere. being oppressed in america and england and further afield should have thought us what it feels like to be oppressed, but it hasnt. we donate a lot of money to african charities and there are some irish organisations that do fanastic work in very poor parts of the world. but when parts of lagos or bejing or moldova come to our shores some parts of the system arent so accommodating.
being an irish citizen living in finland, born in london to irish parents (one of them if you go back far enough would be of scottish settlers / protestant clergy ancestry) and seeing the changes in ireland over the last few years its all just a little crazy. dublin centre now seems to be 30% populated by chinese people, some speaking with a dublin accent. its a very strange thing, something i think the politicians dont seem to be willing to look at the nuances of it all. there was an article in some newspaper when i was home about some nigerian refugees living in galway in west ireland and they were learning irish, i read on a website recently about a chinese boy playing hurling (ireland national sport) in county clare. its been years since i played hurling, years since i spoke irish (even longer since i understood any). anyway. life goes on.
i have no idea what this is all about, but seems cool. need to get my hands on some of the movies though now. french film maker ( jaques tati ) who does stuff based on architecture. thanks to noelani for the tip. anyone who knows anything more is welcome to comment :)

extra info about one of his movies 'playtime' here: clicky (thanks to zé luis)
ive started to add things that are going on in helsinki to the website upcoming.org.
upcoming.org is a collaborative event calendar, completely driven by people like you. enter in the events you're attending, comment on events entered by others, and syndicate event listings to your own weblog.
as upcoming.org learns more about the events you enjoy, it will suggest new events you never would have heard about. |
you can see the helsinki page here, or use the xml or ical links to keep up to date
as i sit here not studying for a (small) test tomorrow, i keep thinking i should post more in finnish. so i will. soon.

amazon posted it today! wahoo. should be here in a few days.
uhoh, a crazy read from the dubliner magazine
10 great myths about the irish isn't it great to be irish? unique among the nations of the world, this green and pleasant land is full of mystics and charming raconteurs. we have scenery to die for and culture on every corner. we are nobody's enemy and everyone's friend. we have given the world guinness, westlife, graham norton and st patrick's day. and now we're the capital of europe! ah yes, the friendly, fun-loving, drink-mad irish. always the party animals, always last to bed... be-gorrah and be-gosh aren't we great craic altogether? but if this is what it means to be irish, why are foreigners starting to dismiss us as insular, provincial and unsophisticated? is the rest of the world starting to see through us? and is it time for us to acknowledge that this package - this arty-party irish identity - is nothing but a paper-thin fabrication built on a pack of lies? |
the happy drunken irish myth the united ireland myth the emerald isle myth the sexual morality myth the ireland of the welcomes myth the catholic ireland myth the drugs myth the literary ireland myth the true europeans myth the neutrality myth |
all the myths are explained in full here. while there is a lot of truth in the article, it does tend to be a pretty negative view of everything.
 (pic take from www.calatrava.com)
just went to his website to get the correct spelling of his name, i always get it wrong, when i saw this building.
new york - 80th south street tower the building will be mr. calatrava's first residential project in the united states. the principal units of the building are 45-foot glazed cubes, each of which contains four floors of residential space. twelve cubes are cantilevered, in steplike fashion, up the building's vertical core, which in plan is a slender concrete rectangle. the core contains the building plant, main elevators, service elevator, and emergency stair, so that usable space within the cubes is maximized. the structure as a whole rises from a 60,000 square foot base, approximately 80 to 90 feet high, which mr. sciame envisions as the home of a major cultural institution. the 80 south street tower as a whole is 835 feet high and will contain 175,000 square feet of space |

i saw a documentary on his work a while back, it showed some of the ideas he had - some of which can be clearly seen in this building - blocks suspending off each other at an angle or (in the case of this project) vertically. another building of his is the turning torso in malmö.

beautiful stuff.
