my mum is a mac convert, having at least one for the last ten years or so. i only used them occasionaly for checking email and found them interesting but always very akward to find my way around. the one button mouse and the apple button confued me and led me to several silly mistakes. now i am using macs in college, and i have grown to be incredibly impressed by them. i was always impressed by the astetics of them all, i am very shallow after all. but now i have grown more fond of the operating system and its little quirks that speed things up, allow things to be completed quicker and with less fuss. the hardest part is using the same programmes on two different platforms. archicad and photoshop on windows and mac computers. the windows programmes using the ctrl button a lot and the mac ones using the apple key a lot, they arent in the same position on the keyboards, so i spend lots of time pressing ctrl on the mac (for copy / paste etc.) but nothing happens, then i go home and continue a drawing and find myself pressing the alt button on the pc a lot. in time i will get better.
stockmann yesterday and this morning, hullut päivät (crazy days) offers. i am no longer under the illusion that finns are reserved. they went crazy when the doors opened, running up five stories to get into the queue for one sale, snatching queue tickets and getting into little fights. that attitude is helping me get back into the mood for new york!!! holidays booked, nyc 23.02. - 06.03.05 jeooow. nyki taas!
![]() autumn is here. one day blue skies and calmness, the next seven is rain and wind.
a: i go to ireland for 10-15 days for either christmas or february. päivi goes to london / paris around the same time. b: going to guatemala via nyc for just over two weeks in mid february for a wedding. b is the current favourite. i am desperate for some time back home, but the wedding is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity. a brochure that came today for stockmanns "hullut päivät" (crazy day sale) next week has a good offer on flights to new york. we'll see.
anyway, version 13 was the first version we knew of that one could get illegally (the advent of cd burners and the internet made it more widespread). it was something that due to the then restrictive nature of the autocad licences that we had to do. our work load was such that the few hours that we could get access every day to computers just wasnt enough. 14 and beyond continued the trend. everyone now was doing all projects on computers. we all used autocad at home, virtually no one paid for it (except in one early incident to an unscrupulous classmate). we learnt illegally for our future careers. autocad just doesnt understand that student versions should be free. a quick search on google showed that autocad 2005 student version is 200$ a year/380€lifetime from one vendor. also, i have vague memories of trying to buy autocad student version in dublin years ago, but facing a very very unhelpful seller there i am now using archicad for my current course. there are two types of archicad. the commercial one and the educational one. the educational one is for students and universities. they share a file format that isnt compatible with the commercial version, and it has some other limitatations in exporting of files; but the programme itself works exactly the same as the commercial one. perfect for learning without the guilt. i just returned from the dealer here where i got the student version for 0€.
