![]() ![]() even a few weeks after i saw it, i still dont know what to make of it all. the colour used was a strange choice, but worked well as a strong contrast with the snow covered park. as we walked around we kept asking ourselves, "its great and impressive ... but ...". it just seemed as if something was missing. the other show we saw was the complete opposite of "the gates". it was internal, in a constructed space, dark, beautifully lit and surrounding us. the space was amazing and gave the whole proceedings a strong definition. whereas in "the gates" we always got distracted, queuing for food, walking down a path, seeing the skyline around etc, in the "ashes and snow" show, it was more like "tunnel vision" as we were only taking in the photos and the video that was the focus of it all. the space was designed by japanese architect shigeru ban and the images/video was by artist gregory colbert. as we walked down the 200metres or so of the space, we were looking at all these amazing photographs from different parts of the world. showing mans interaction with various animals. we kept talking about how amazing the photos were and how "one off" they looked (as in they looked "staged" to a certain extent. not in the fake sense of the word though). we could see at the end of the 200m there was a video playing. when we got to it it was very surprising to see that all the photos we had seen were merely "screenshots" of the video. it was some of the most amazing footage i have seen in ages, so simple and pure and delightful. i hope that they eventually release the video used as it was something i would love to see again. anyway we sat there entranced for about 40minutes before the cold early march air pushed us away. we were sitting towards the front of the area and as we walked back it took a little while to make our way through the people watching the screen. it was a strange and oddly nice sensation to see everyone staring intensely at the screen. its there until june 6th. go see it! extra links: a review three short movies from the exhibition: one : two : three [all quicktime format and about 1,5mb] ![]() ![]()
the planners want to extend this metro line to the west to the neighbouring city of espoo (where nokia has its headquarters). espoo is a bit reluctant of the price but their final decision will be made over the next 12-18 months hopfully. at the same time they want to build a second metro line (this one a north south) that intersects the current one in the city centre. when the first metro line was opened in the 1980s they built an extra station underneath one of the stations (kamppi station) on the line because to build it at the time saved a huge amount of money for any future expansion of the network (which is now about to begin). (also the kamppi site is currently the largest commecial building site in the nordic countries as a huge new shopping centre/underground bus station is almost finished ahead of schedule!) this north south line will eventually start to the south east of the city centre, then cross the current line at the kamppi station and continue north to meet helsinkis second train station at pasila (the pasila station will itself get a huge make over, going from the current 10 platforms to a planned 18 i think) and the metro will then split into two lines. one north to the airport and the other more easterly. anyway, there was a few articles in the "helsingin sanomat" newspaper over the weekend and those articles are now available on the papers english language section. links: seed of new subway line sprouting in basement of kamppi complex (handy map there on that page too) comment: from the westbound line to the airport factfile: the cheap expensive subway hkl (the english language website of the people who run the trams/buses/metros) there is a link to a pdf document there that talks about their vision for the next 7years or so. helsinki city planning people originally posted to the boards.ie commuter/transport forum last month, dont know why i didnt post it here sooner. it was written at 2am one morning, so i might have left some things out.
yesterday was my birthday and it was a truly atrocious day. a day best forgotten. so it will be. a friend and i rescheduled my birthday to the 28th of this month due to a misunderstood sms (my age and the date got confused) today is st. patricks day, the people back in the old country are currently watching television right now enjoying their day off. damn them. new job going well, whereas college finds me struggling with trying to understand 3d studio max instructions in finnish. i did however get some of my 3d models published in a finnish magazine this month. which is nice. i have a few posts going around my head at the moment that i will try to get on here over the weekend. its been pretty crazy since coming back from nyc last week; jet lag (much worse with 7hours time difference in comparison with the 5hours from nyc-dublin), new job, college, unpacking (almost finished!). so time to exhale and listen to some nice music. its 1541 and ive to get a train in 15minutes.
hello march. full update of recent exciting events coming soon!. probably :) |
