makasiinit (scheduled for demolition on monday, and the scene of “rioting” last week) went up in flames this evening here in helsinki. well, half of it did (the half closest to kiasma). the centre was crazy, full of thousands of people watching on – moving their positions depending on the wind direction. we saw one or two people crying, lots of people looking on and taking pictures, and a few teenagers being annoying and funny (one held up a sausage to the flames (he was 20m from them) – then a few hours later went through the crowd offering “the last sausage roasted on the heat of makasiinit as it went up in flames” (perhaps something lost in translation)).
anyway – lets see how this all plays out over the next few days – in the mean time here are the pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dw/sets/72057594126455333/
extra: i was thinking last night, perhaps because part of makasiinit is now a crime scene, maybe the wont demolish it in 48hours to give them time to do investigations etc. *waits for english translations on finnish news sites*
